St Mary's is the parish church of Fairford, and stands a few minutes' walk from Martin and Nicky's dwelling. Martin was frequently seen there in his part-time choir-member capacity, as The Rev'd Brian Atkinson remarked as he welcomed the large congregation. He observed that it was to be a memorial service in which the secular and the sacred would blend, then announced that '... for the first time in twenty-five years I shall join the congregation in singing a Beatles song ... '.
